The Role of the Waqfs in Economic Development of Al-Quds and its Surrounding
For centuries in the Islamic states and societies, foundations have been placed among the leading institutions, as well as have undertaken the duty of the most important social organization for the perpetuity and well-being of the societies. At the present time, the waqfs continue to provide many public services as the strongest civil society organizations. If assessed in its historical process, in autochthonous city Al-Quds, there is a vision how waqfs ensoul the city’s silhouette and socio-economic life; so that it cannot be ruled out today that enhancing the waqf potentialities for the economic development and social well-being of Al-Quds and its surroundings is of great importance.
Among the decisions taken at the Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened in Istanbul on April 15, 2016 headed by Turkish President Honorable Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the call the member states for the support and enlargement of the strengthening of economic programs for the Palestinian people in the Palestinian territories and Al-Quds territories has been issued. In this context, Masjid Al-Aqsa Fund was established under the administration of Islamic Development Bank. It is aimed to support and strengthen the existence of the Palestinian people in their land. In the same way, member states have been invited to mobilize more resources to this program with the voluntary involvements of governments, institutions, private sector and individuals.
The International Forum on Al-Quds Waqfs, which is organized in this framework, aims to bring together waqfs working on Jerusalem all over the world, in particular by establishing links between waqfs, and to explore opportunities for cooperation and cooperation between each other. The forum, which aims to unite the subject waqfs under common platform, information exchange on the existing and future planned activities for recovering Al- Quds waqfs and supporting the Palestinian people will be undertaken as well as the ways of utilizing existing resources effectively and efficiently will be investigated. The forum, in which the issues of building and strengthening the civil society will be discussed deeply, aims to provide a roadmap for improving the economic conditions of Al-Quds and its environ.
In this direction; The International Forum on Al-Quds Waqfs will be organized by the Turkish Republic Prime Ministry Directorate General of Foundations and the International Islamic Foundation in Malaysia and with the support of the Islamic Development Bank and under the auspices of the Turkish Republic President Honorable Recep Tayyip Erdoğan within this scope, theme is chosen as the “The Role of the Waqfs in the Economic Development of Al-Quds City and its Environ”.
State leaders from various Islamic countries, the Ministers and high senior managers responsible for their countries’ waqf governance, guests from Al-Quds, speakers from different countries of the world, experts and academicians on Al-Quds waqfs and also national and international NGOs will be invited to the organization which will be held on May 08-09, 2017 (12-13 Şaban 1438) in Istanbul, Turkey.
